It’s a statistic that is sobering to hear — that one in nine people on the North Side of Chicago suffers from food insecurity. At Milito’s Auto Repair, we believe that nobody should go hungry, which is why we’ve teamed up with Lakeview Pantry to help reduce that statistic.
What Is Food Insecurity?
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) defines food insecurity as a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. That sounds like a basic human right, but 40 million Americans — including more than 12 million children — were food insecure in 2017.
While hunger and food insecurity are closely related, it’s important to know that they are distinct concepts. Hunger refers to a personal, physical sensation of discomfort, while food insecurity refers to a lack of available financial resources for food at the level of the household.
Those households are looking for help, and they can find it in the form of a local organization like Lakeview Pantry.
How Lakeview Pantry Is Helping the Hungry
One of Chicago’s largest and longest-operating food pantries, Lakeview Pantry’s mission is “to eliminate hunger and poverty in our community by providing food to fill the basic need of hungry people; increasing the independence of our clients through self-help initiatives and other innovative programs; and raising awareness of hunger and poverty and working towards solutions to eliminate them.”
With an ultimate goal to eradicate hunger and poverty in the community, they also aim to be a compassionate, effective, and collaborative service delivery — giving a hand up instead of just a hand out.
Who Lakeview Pantry Is Helping
Since 1970, they have grown into an organization that provides more than 1.6 million pounds of food to Chicago neighbors each year. Who they serve:
30% of Lakeview Pantry clients are underemployed
46% are disabled and/or retired
45% of Lakeview Pantry clients have at least one child under the age of 18
3% of Lakeview Pantry clients are homeless
Through the help of donations, they’re able to supply nutritious food using a choice-based distribution model, offer home delivery services for elderly, disabled, and homebound clients, provide personal hygiene products (and toys and coats during holidays), and social service.
