Why they really are “The ultimate driving machine”
BMW is a brand as rich in history as it is reputation, and the name is synonymous with luxury. While it’s gone through advances, changes, and innovations throughout the years, what hasn’t changed is the superior quality that it provides.
Why is BMW So Popular?
As one BMW owner put it, “Drive one. You’ll figure it out in a hurry why they’re so popular. Nothing else drives like a BMW.” It shows in sales, as those of BMW brand models rose 4.2% in 2017 to 2.09 million passenger cars and SUVs, with almost 1,400 cars sold in Chicago in 2017 alone — the X5 being the number one seller in the Chicagoland area.
And the customization options are endless, from M Performance wheels and brakes to aerodynamic parts and interior trim. BMW prides itself on offering customers a custom-made model, something they feel gives them the edge over the competition.
Who Typically Owns a BMW?
According to DataMasters, BMW is an equal opportunity luxury vehicle when it comes to the sexes with owners being equally male and female. BMW owners are the youngest in the luxury car market, with the average consumer being in their mid-forties.
Around 30% have a four-year degree, their own home, and a household income of around $175,000 from self-employment in the construction sector or other trades. This only accounts for new vehicles, but regardless of whether the car is new or used, BMW owners are known to take pride in their ride.
Of course nothing is perfect, and drivers have reported the following problems the most often:

A used BMW is an increasingly attractive option, with new models selling for ever-increasing prices.
If you are in the market for a pre-owned BMW, here are five things that you should do:
According to the company, “everything about the BMW brands is designed to transform customers’ dreams into reality, today and in the future.”
And in the future, you can expect to see a better range with batteries, as well as hybrid technology where you have both gas and electric motors.
They’re also working on autonomous driving, electro-mobility, creative concept models, and devices that connect the vehicle with its surroundings and other traffic.
The BMW 2 Series Coupé Wi-Fi hotspot allows up to ten devices to surf the net and goes from 0-60 mph in as little as 4.2 seconds.
The BMW i8 Roadster is a plug-in hybrid vehicle that represents the future of electric mobility, offering the driver four modes — Comfort, Sport, Ecopro, and eDrive.
The 2019 BMW X5 has a dashboard that features a pair of 12.3-inch screens, a multimedia system with an iDrive controller on the console, personal settings stored in the cloud, and a 20-gigabyte hard drive.
BMW can trace its roots back to March 7, 1916, when Bayerische Motoren Werke was formed as BFW (Bayerische Flugzeugwerke), a company that primarily made airplane engines.
BMW relocated their production facility to the Oberwiesenfeld airfield near Munich in 1922, and the production facility would eventually become the headquarters for the entire BMW group. Today the Munich headquarters manufacture more than 200,000 cars every year and employ more than 9,000 employees.
In 1923, BMW expanded from manufacturing airplane engines to motorcycles. Their first motorcycle was called the R32, and the engine was so efficient that it’s still used today in modern day BMW motorcycles.
The First Cars
But what about automobiles? BMW became a manufacturer in 1928 by purchasing Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach, the third largest automobile manufacturer located in Germany at the time. The first car was built in 1929, and after surviving the war, the company began to thrive.
In 1951, BMW produced the 501 — its first automobile since the outbreak of the war. It was known for its large interior and the fact that it could comfortably sit six people. By 1954, the BMW 502 V8 super made its debut, which allowed the company to enhance its reputation worldwide. When BMW introduced a muscle 507 car in 1956, it became the company’s largest money earner at that time.
Over the next 90+ years, the company would go on to redefine an entire segment of the automotive market. It would dominate racetracks, set records for speed and altitude, and build its very own Lamborghini.
Coming to America
BMW finally moved some production to the United States in 1994, building a plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina. This allowed them to not only expand their global operations, but also manufacture vehicles much closer to their largest consumer. It was in 1994 that BMW also acquired the British-based Rover Group, and in 1998 BMW purchased the Rolls-Royce group.
Not a bad looking résumé for an auto manufacturer who started by building airplane engines.
The blue and the white in the logo are the national colors of the German state of Bavaria, not propellers in a blue sky as many people think.
In 1937, the world record for fastest motorcycle went to BMW for going 173.7mph.
BMW made its first electric car in 1972, an all-electric version of its popular 1602. With less than 50 hp, it used 12 batteries and could drive for up to 19 miles at a time.
Revenue for the company topped $114 billion in 2017.
BMW’s headquarter design is similar to that of a four-cylinder engine.
