Popular Jeep Wrangler Modifications

How to Modify a Jeep Wrangler for Better Performance.

Jeep Wranglers are some of the most popular off-road vehicles of all time. While they’re already designed to be rugged, many Wrangler enthusiasts make significant modifications to change the look, add new features, and/or improve the vehicle’s ability to handle even the most unforgiving terrain. The Milito’s team loves to work on Jeeps of all kinds, and we love seeing all the different modifications people use to customize Wranglers.

For drivers just joining the Jeep family, as well as those looking to transform their Jeep into something truly unique, we’ve assembled a list of some of the most popular Wrangler modifications we see here in the shop.

Add a Lift Kit to Your Jeep Wrangler

To give a Jeep more clearance, change the appearance, and accommodate larger tires, “lift kits” are among the most common Wrangler modifications we see. The term refers to multiple components working together to raise the body of the vehicle higher off the ground – but the specifics can be quite complex.

Small lift kits (like a 2.5” lift) may only involve spring spacers, allowing for a larger tire without changing factory suspension. Larger lifts, however, can require aftermarket springs, shocks, flex arms, and so on. The options are numerous, and choosing the right lift kit is a matter of personal preference and intended use.

It’s worth considering if the Jeep will be driving on the highway, for mixed use, or a dedicated off-road vehicle. Higher lifts can alter the vehicle’s wheelbase, change how it handles, and affect available tire sizes. If you’re unsure which type of lift kit is best for you, our expert team can help.

Aftermarket Jeep Tires

Tires directly affect the type of terrain a Jeep can tackle. Large off-road tires are great for mud and trails, but decrease gas mileage. Smaller tires might be better for highway and city driving, but won’t handle rugged conditions as well.

Like lift kits, choosing tires is a personal choice, and depends on the driver’s aesthetic, the vehicle’s intended use, the height of the lift, rim size, and model-specific factors like wheel wells.

The Milito’s staff can help Wrangler drivers evaluate their options, find the right aftermarket tires, and get them installed to ensure the Jeep’s ready for its next off-roading adventure.

Interior Jeep Mods

Modified Jeeps are often built with all terrain driving in mind, but to protect the interior of the vehicle (and make the ride more enjoyable for passengers), many off-roaders choose to make modifications like installing grab handles, floor liners, entry guards, seat covers, phone mounts, and so on.

Most of these interior modifications are easy to install, and the options are nearly endless.

Improve a Jeep’s Safety and Recovery

Last but certainly not least, safety and recovery equipment is an important part of readying a Wrangler for off-road excursions. Winch systems are among the most common, and can be extremely useful if a Jeep gets stuck in the mud or needs to climb a particularly steep hill. This idea of “recovery” extends to tow hooks, snatch blocks, and even keeping gloves, shovels, and jacks on hand.

Safety modifications can also include special harnesses in lieu of traditional seatbelts, custom roll cages, and upgraded bumpers and fenders to improve durability in the event of an accident. To protect the vehicle itself, many Jeep drivers also install skid plates to protect undercarriage components, steel rock sliders, and robust front bumper guards called “bull bars.”

All of these modifications serve to keep the driver and passengers safe while off-roading, as well as protect the body of the Jeep from damage, recover from getting stuck, and helping other off-roaders in need.

Jeep Wranglers are among the most commonly customized, modified, and upgraded vehicles of all time. From the debut model in 1986 to the modern Wranglers of today, enthusiasts make all kinds of changes to prepare for off-roading, to increase comfort and safety, or to simply create the look they’ve always wanted!
